From 1984 to 1991 my research focused on paediatric endocrinology with particular interest in growth hormone and insulin like growth factors and their binding proteins. From 1991 to 1998 my studies concentrated on the role of the molecules described above and on retinoids in the apoptotic pathways in oncology, in particular neuroblastoma.
Since 1998 I have focused on Glutathione transferases, a family of enzymes involved in cell detoxification and in the control of the programmed cell death. This work has concentrated on the role of those enzymes in the mechanisms responsible for drug resistance depending on changes in the redox status of the cell. As part of this research I have set up and managed a cell and molecular biology laboratory able to perform qRT-PCR and microarray for differential gene expression as well as some applications in Proteomics.
Since 2003 I have collaborated in the application of molecular biology methods and proteomics techniques in research applied to neurodegenerative diseases, oncology and pharmacogenetics.
Since 2009 I have collaborated in the application of molecular biology and biochemical methods (NMR) to monitoring of sport training and performance.
He is author of more than 200 publications in International Journals.

Lisette van Gemert-Pijnen
Bernard Gouget is a Counsellor for Public Health at the Fédération Hospitalière de France (FHF) where he is responsible for monitoring national programs involving the growing challenges facing public hospitals and the health care system. Most of his academic career has been spent at the University Paris-Descartes as assistant Professor in Physiology and Laboratory Medicine with two main thrusts: organ physiology in intensive care with a special focus on NBIC (Nanotechnologies (POCT/ e-health technologies), Biotechnologies, Informatics and Cognitive sciences (Big Data and AI)) and on the impact of the digital revolution on the organization of the health care system as well as the patient empowerment with m-health apps and wearable technologies (smartphone-based approaches). Currently, he is member of different non-governmental “think-tanks” and official working parties on telemedicine, m-health and e-health services.
Dr. Gouget has gained extensive academic qualifications in the medical sciences and in health economy, including a DEA in Health economy and a thesis in law and public health economy. He was nominated to the list of approved hospitals directors in 1995. B. Gouget has also served as member of the steering committee in charge of the French reform of the medical laboratories. He was nominated as expert in medical biology for the European Union at the Ministry of health level. He is the President of the Committee of the Human Healthcare Section at the COFRAC (National body for accreditation).
He started his collaboration with IFCC in 1991 as assistant editor of JIFCC, then as member of the publications division. He is former chair of the IFCC-Communications and Publications Division (1997-2003).
Dr. Gouget is acting as General Secretary at the International Francophone Federation of Clinical Biology and Laboratory Medicine (FIFBCML) established in 2007 by the French speaking and Euro-Mediterranean countries to reinforce the international network of laboratory scientists within IFCC.
Damien Gruson - Professor, Ph.D
Damien is Specialist in Laboratory Medicine in 2005 from the Catholic University of Louvain, Brussels, Belgium. He fulfilled in PhD thesis entitled “Regulation and Physiopathology of Urotensin II and Urocortin in Congestive Heart Failure” in November 2011. He took his position at the Department of Laboratory Medicine of the St-Luc University Hospital in 2008.
He is a member of the research unit on Endocrinolgy Diabetes and Nutrition of the Catholic University of Louvain. He have published numerous articles in several international peer-reviewed journals. He is pleased to be board member of the Belgian Society of Laboratory Medicine and of the French Society of Laboratory Medicine.
He is delighted to be review editor for Clinical Biochemistry. He is also to be a member of the division on Emerging Technologies of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) and a member of the Endocrinology division of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry (AACC).
Marc Lange - Secretary General of EHTEL
Marc Lange has a 15+ years’ experience in Digital Health as Secretary General of EHTEL, the one multi-stakeholder organisation within Europe that brings together organisations and individuals engaged in all aspects of eHealth.
The unique structure of EHTEL enables the exchange of ideas and information leading to innovation and improvement in the delivery of eHealth solutions and the transformation of health and social care. It does not lobby on behalf of particular groups but rather facilitates interaction between all of them.
Marc has 25+ experience in Project/Programme Management of international/European projects in social security, eID and eHealth. His experience covers domains such as (1) facilitating sharing good practices in a multi-disciplinary environment, (2) observing, analysing and synthesizing the progresses of this knowledge sharing process (3) contributing to policy definition for deploying innovative ICT services for the health care sector in particular and (4) supporting EU Member States and the European Commission in coordinating the deployment of their national projects.
Allan Böhm - MD, MBA
Finished the 3rd Medical Faculty at the Charles University in Prague and MBA – Healthcare management at the Business Institute. He works at the department of acute cardiology at the National institute of cardiovascular diseases in Bratislava, Slovakia. Besides clinical medicine, he is also engaged in clinical and translational research for which he acquired several international awards. The areas of his interest are antithrombotic therapy, atrial fibrillation, microRNAs and big data analysis. He operates at the European Society of Cardiology as the nucleus member of the Cardiologists of tomorrow and the member of the digital health committee.
Marlien Varnfield obtained a BSc Honours degree from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and an MSc (focusing on periodontal diseases) from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Pretoria, South Africa. Her PhD research at the Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine, Monash University, Australia, focused on evaluating the potential for large scale implementation of health-care interventions utilising Information and Communication Technologies.
Marlien currently leads the Mobile Health Systems Team at the Australian e-Health Research Centre, Health & Biosecurity, CSIRO. Her research focuses on the development, evaluation and translation of tele- and m-health services. Specifically, she has extensive experience in care models designed to deliver support in management of people living with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and kidney disease, at home. Through involvement and management of numerous large research projects, she has studied innovative ways in ambulatory monitoring and management for best health outcomes, and creating new business and clinical service models to accommodate best practice care. In addition to numerous national and international conference presentations, she has extensively published in the field of chronic disease management and mobile health.
Marlien is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and was a faculty member of the European Congress on eCardiology and eHealth that was held in Berlin in 2016 and Core faculty member of the same Congress in 2017. In June 2018, she was awarded the prestigious CSIRO Julius Career Award and her team’s work has also been recognised through a number of 2018 AIIA Queensland Innovation Awards.
Francesco Migliavacca - Professor, Ph.D
Obtained a MSc in Mechanical Engineering in 1992 and a PhD in Bioengineering in 1997 both from Politecnico di Milano. In 2000 he worked as a Research Assistant at the Cardiothoracic Unit of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London in 1994 and 1997-99. At present he is a Full Professor of Bioengineering in the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering ‘Giulio Natta’ of Politecnico di Milano. From September 2007to March 2018 he was the Director of the Laboratory of Biological Structure Mechanics (LaBS) of the Politecnico di Milano. His major research activities have included the fluid dynamic optimization of pediatric cardiac surgery procedures, fluid dynamics in the living systems as well as structural analysis and material behavior of biomedical devices, in particular intravascular stents. He is involved in funded researches from the European Commission, the Foundation Leducq and public and private Italian National programs. He received the medal 'Le Scienze 2001' in Engineering and was awarded the European Society of Biomechanics Perren Award in 2004. He is Associate Editor of the peer-reviewed journals ‘Cardiovascular Engineering and Technology’ and ‘Frontiers in Pediatric Cardiology’.
Professor Gianfranco Parati - Professor, Ph.D
Gianfranco Parati is full Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Department of Medicine and Surgery, and Director of the School of Specialization in Cardiovascular Diseases, University of Milan-Bicocca, Milan, Italy. Since 2008 he is head of the Department of Cardiovascular, Neural and Metabolic Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences, at San Luca Hospital, Istituto Auxologico Italiano, Milan, Italy and since May 2018 is also Scientific Director at Istituto Auxologico Italiano, Milan, Italy.
Professor Parati received his MD degree from the University of Milan where he completed also his Residency training, achieving the specialization in Cardiology and in Internal Medicine at the Milan University Hospital. Thereafter, he was visiting scientists in various institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA and Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.
Professor Parati’s research interests include ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and analysis of cardiovascular variability; neural control of circulation; pathophysiology and treatment of hypertension; congestive heart failure, cardiovascular effects of sleep alterations and sleep related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea; cardiovascular effects of respiratory training; cardiovascular pharmacology, cardiovascular and general effects of exposure to high altitude hypobaric hypoxia.
Professor Parati has experience in clinical trials management, as he conducted clinical research according to GCP. He is the author of 750 publications in peer reviewed Journals and books (H-index 84; Total citations 33504) and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals including Journal of Hypertension (Executive Editor), Hypertension Research (Associate Editor), Hypertension, and Blood Pressure Monitoring Journal.
Professor Parati is Past President of the Italian Society of Hypertension, chairman of the Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring of the Italian Society of Hypertension, past president of the Working Group on Heart Failure of the Italian Society of Cardiology and past president of the Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring and Cardiovascular Variability of the European Society of Hypertension. He has also been nucleus member of the Working Group on Hypertension and the Heart of the European Society of Cardiology. He has been nominated international fellow of the High Blood Pressure Council of the American Heart Association, is Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and a member of the International Society of Hypertension. He is ex officio member of the Council of the European Society of Hypertension and elected as Liaison Officer in the nucleus board of the Council on Hypertension of the European Society of Cardiology. In 2017 Prof. Parati has been nominated member of the Board of Directors as representative of Europe and Secretary general of the World Hypertension League. In 1978 he was the first in the country who began to develop and introduce into clinical practice the method of X-ray computed tomography of the whole body.
In 1984 he defended his doctoral dissertation on computer tomography of voluminous neoplasms of the abdominal cavity.

Eva Piotrowicz is active as a medical practitioner in the field of telemedicine, telerehabilitation, teleelectrocardiography and cardiac rehabilitation. Her particular interests are the mechanisms provoked by exercise training in patients with heart failure and organizing telecare and telerehabilitation for heart failure patients. Together with her team, she has created and carries on cardiac telerehabilitation, telediagnosis and teleconsultation at the Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw, Poland.

Eva Piotrowicz is the author of numerous papers devoted to cardiac telerehabilitation in heart failure patients, teleelectrocardiology and telecardiology. A co-author of two documents dealing with European guidelines of rehabilitation in heart failure patients: Exercise training in heart failure: from theory to practice. Leor Perl - MD
Dr. Perl is a board-certified cardiology specialist at the cardiovascular division at the Rabin Medical Center, Israel. He holds a faculty position at the Tel Aviv University and acts as an attending interventional cardiologist at both the Beilinson and Hasharon campuses. His academic research encompasses both translational and clinical outcomes of patients undergoing percutaneous procedures, focusing on periprocedural care and interventional-based therapies for ischemic heart disease and heart failure.
Dr. Perl completed his M.D. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, internal medicine residency at the Meir Medical Center, cardiology fellowship at the Rabin Medical Center, and interventional cardiology fellowship at the Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Perl has served as the medical director for Vectorious Medical Technologies since 2012, a company which had developed the V-LAP wireless monitoring system for patients with heart failure, as well as a consultant to numerous medical device companies in Israel and the Bay Area. Doctor Gao a key member of SofTMech (www.softmech.org) and a lecturer in school of mathematics and statistics. His primary research interest lies in mathematical modelling of the cardiovascular system, in particular in multi-physics, multi-scale personalization biomechanical models, and image-based model reconstructions. Blanca Rodriguez is Professor of Computational Medicine at the University of Oxford. Her research interest is on investigating causes and modulators of variability in the response of the human heart to disease and medicines, using computational approaches in combination with experimental and clinical recordings (www.cs.ox.ac.uk/ccs). She is actively engaged in training and career development of junior colleagues, and committed to promoting diversity and women in science, as key to the success of any organisation. She graduated as an Engineer from the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, with a PhD in 2002. Joost Daemen, MD, PhD
Joost Daemen is a senior interventional cardiologist at the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam the Netherlands. He finished medical school at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 2005. Between 2005 and 2008 he completed a PhD project entitled “the caveats of drug-eluting stents – a critical appraisal of the safety concerns”. After obtaining his PhD Cum Laude, he commenced his clinical- and interventional cardiology training at the Thoraxcenter in Rotterdam and partly in Insel Spital, Bern, Switzerland. At present, Dr. Daemen is participating in cathlab related activities including complex PCI including the use of left ventricular assist devices, structural heart interventions including TAVI and Mitraclip as well as renal sympathetic denervation. Next to his clinical activities Dr. Daemen is highly active in cardiovascular research with a specific focus on intracoronary imaging and physiology and renal sympathetic denervation.

My group uses national audit data derived from the national cardiovascular societies at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR; https://www.ucl.ac.uk/nicor) aswell as large datasets from the US such as the Nationwide Inpatient Sample and National Readmissions Dataset to study outcomes in patients with cardiovascular diseases such as valvular heart disease and coronary artery diseases, particularly patients with acute coronary syndromes or undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions, pacemaker implantation or TAVI. I have published over 260 peer-reviewed papers in the highest impact international cardiovascular journals using big data in populations with cardiovascular disease and our work has consistently attracted editorials from international leaders in the field and has received widespread media coverage. More than 10% of my publications have received accompanying editorials from US- or European-based leaders in the field of cardiology.
Our work has focussed around comorbidity, complications and clinical outcomes sustained during percutaneous coronary intervention and highlighted how these complications have changed over time, what has driven this, and the prognostic impact of such complications. Our work has contributed to a change in practice both nationally and internationally. My group’s aim is to deliver high-quality, cutting-edge interventional cardiology research linking electronic health data from patients undergoing interventional procedures and other routinely collected data. I am a member of the European Society of Cardiology e-cardiology working group and have recently become appointed as Associate Editor of Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions. ervation.
Mamas A. Mamas
Jos Kraal obtained his BSc and MSc degree in Human Movement Sciences at the Free University in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Throughout his Bachelors and Masters he specialized in rehabilitation and health. During the last year of his Master in Human Movement Sciences, he obtained a second MSc in Public Health, focusing on Healthcare Policy, Management and Innovation at Maastricht University, the Netherlands.
After finishing both his master degrees, he started a PhD at the Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam and Máxima Medical Center, Veldhoven/Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He received his PhD in 2016 at the department of Medical Informatics at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. During his PhD he conducted research focused on the development of a home-based cardiac rehabilitation intervention of patients with coronary artery disease. Other related projects during his PhD involved the assessment of physical activity levels using wearable sensors and optimization of exercise training in cardiac rehabilitation to improve physical fitness.
Currently, Jos is senior projectleader and post-doctoral fellow at Flow, Center for Prevention, Telemedicine and Rehabilitation at Máxima Medical Center, Veldhoven/Eindhoven, the Netherlands. His research focuses on the development of tailored, innovative rehabilitation models using wearable sensors, digital platforms and gamification principles, and a remote telemonitoring management program for patients with chronic heart failure and COPD.
Eric Boersma was born in 1966. He studied Mathematics (MSc in 1990) and Clinical Epidemiology (MSc 2001). He is appointed (2008) Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the Erasmus MC. Prof. Boersma has over 25 years experience in the fields of cardiovascular diseases and biostatistics. His teaching and research interests focus on statistical methods for clinical data analysis, and risk modelling in cardiovascular diseases, with emphasis on the role of imaging and blood biomarkers. He has co-authored over 900 publications in international peer-reviewed journal. His H-factor is 100. Prof. Boersma is the project leader of the BIOMArCS, CREW, TRIUMPH and BigMedilytics consortia, which involve scientific experts in a variety of disciplines. Prof. Boersma is appointed (2012) Scientific Director of the Cardiovascular Research School Erasmus MC Rotterdam (COEUR).
Stefan Busnatu - MD, PhD and Head of Digital Communication and IT Department - University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Carol Davila”, Bucharest; Romanian Young Ambassador for preventive cardiology(ESC/EAPC). He was part of the FP7 EU Project FI-STAR (Future Internet Social and Technological Alignment Research) No. 604691 research team and worked at developing a cardiac rehabilitation solution for myocardial infarction patients and currently is involved in the Horizon 2020 project, vCare- Virtual Coaching Activities for Rehabilitation in Elderly, Project No 769807. He`s aim is to study and develop new strategies of optimizing the cardiovascular diseases prevention programs using eHealth and to promote the use of digital technologies in the healthcare environment.
Stavroula G. Mougiakakou is a Senior lecturer and holds a Ph.D. degree in computer engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. Since 2008 she is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bern and Head of the Diabetes Technology Research Group at the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research Bern, Switzerland. Her current research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and advanced data analysis for the prevention and treatment optimization of diabetes and related chronic diseases. She has published more than 70 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, book chapters, and conferences proceedings and has served as an Associate Editor in several high ranked journals in her field, while she the organizer of the international workshop on multimedia assisted dietary assessment (MADiMa). Dr. Mougiakakou has supervised more than 16 PhD and MSc students and is a member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, the IEEE Computer Society and the Swiss Society of Biomedical Engineering.

Yury Belenkov, Professor, PhD, Academician of RAS, Head of the department of Hospital Therapy No. 1 of the Faculty of Medicine I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University), Moscow, Russia
Academician Belenkov is an outstanding cardiologist and therapist, a scientist of world renown, dedicated his entire life to the development of national and world medicine. He has been working in medicine for more than 40 years, is the founder of introduction of ultrasonic methods of the heart examination and the usage of magnetic resonance imaging in therapy and cardiology in Russia.
In 1972, Dr. Belenkov graduated with honors from the medical faculty of the Nizhny Novgorod Medical Institute and entered the clinical residency of the A.L. Myasnikov Cardiology Institute of the Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow.
Yury Belenkov was engaged in space cardiology, took an active part in the survey of cosmonauts and the creation of domestic ultrasound equipment, including for equipping the space orbital station. He headed the All-Union Cardiological Scientific Center (VKNC) of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, was the pro-rector of the Moscow State University, the director of the Medical Scientific and Educational Center of the Moscow State University.
For many decades, Academician Belenkov has been in charge of the Department of Hospital Therapy of the IM Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. He conducts an active scientific work.
Academician Belenkov represents Russia in the European Society of Cardiology, he is the founder and president of the Russian Scientific Society of Heart Failure Specialists, a member of the Presidium of the Russian Society of Cardiology and the Society of Cardiology of CIS countries.
Johan G. Beun (1953)
In 1988 he was the co-founder of the Dutch Adrenal Society. He is a former chairman of Dutch Adrenal Society.
In October 1999 he was one of the founding fathers of EHTEL (= European Health Telematics Association), serving as a board member until 2003.
He is a former board member (1998 - 2000) of Dutch Millennium Committee for Care and a co-founder (2001) and former board member of Dutch Nat. ICT Institute for Healthcare, NICTIZ.
Johan served the M.O.H. till 2009 as Ambassador for the Dutch National ICT Institute for Healthcare and was meanwhile international advisor to various countries, ministries and organizations to support them in their processes around the design and implementation of the EPR (=electronic patient record), one of the excellent instruments for better patient safety.
From 2010 to 2013 Johan was the INFORMATION & ICT coordinator/advisor for various healthcare provider organizations and a permanent advisor to some of their boards in the fields of good innovative healthcare administration, information policies and strategic issues. He was an advisor for the innovation processes in the NHS in Wales.
He cooperated with the board of Kaiser Permanente California, USA as one of their international sensors & advisors. He supported the Turkish M.O.H. to restructure a part of their healthcare system in central Turkey.
Till October 2012 he was the Innovation, Information & ICT coordinator of the largest “cooperation” of physiotherapy praxis’s in the Netherlands. Organizing a single, highly sophisticated back-office for over a hundred physiotherapists.
Johan has been chairman of many national and international committees, organizations, conferences etc. on healthcare, electronic patient records, standardization and patient interests.
In December 2014 he co-founded BijnierNET (=AdrenalNET). Together with the eight academic hospitals and some teaching hospitals in NL and of course with the cooperation of the patient movement and the group of nurse practitioners. Johan and his team show that it is time to move from the silos of knowledge to sharing between the two expert groups:
- the doctor, the specialist, the experts who knows all about the disease
- the patient, the expert who knows all about the effects of the disease

The innovative work of Prof Casado Arroyo’s multidisciplinary team has been focused on the design and selection of personalized cardiovascular treatments based on the analysis and characterization of each patient’s heart rhythm disturbance. The final objective is to improve outcomes and quality of life of patients. He holds a MSc in Health Economics, Policy and Management (London School of Economics).
His current research projects: Hearth rhythm disturbances (atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia), Cardiovascular Epidemiology, eCardiology Health economics,.
Prof Casado Arroyo’s has authored more than 80 articles published in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals (JACC, Circulation EP, European Heart Journal, Heart, JCE, Heart Rhythm), and he has given more than 200 presentations at medical and scientific conferences around the world. He is on the Editorial Board of several professional journals. Prof Casado Arroyo also acts as advisor to international organisations such as the European Medicines Agency and the Institut National d'Assurance Maladie-Invalidité.
Prof Casado Arroyo is a member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Currently, he is Nucleus Member of the ESC, working group on e-Cardiology. He’s also member of the EHRA and the Belgium and the Spanish Society of Cardiology.

Pierre-François Migeotte, MSc., PhD. Director of Research and Head of the Lab. Of Physics and Physiology (LPHYS) in the Cardiology Department of the Erasmus Hospital / Université libre de Bruxelles.
In 1996, he graduated in Physics (MSc.) from Université libre de Bruxelles and in 1997 in Business Administration from ISC St Louis.
In 2003, he obtained a PhD. on the physiological adaptation of astronauts to spaceflight and the influence of microgravity on the cardiovascular system and cardio-pulmonary interactions. His research interests include space exploration and the adaptation of the human physiology to microgravity, artificial gravity, and other extreme environments. He is involved in the development of numerical signal processing techniques and devices for the noninvasive and ambulatory monitoring of the cardiorespiratory function. In 1999, he received the first prize of the student contest of the “Life Odyssey Symposium” delivered by the European Space Agency (ESA) and since then he had the opportunity to conduct several studies in microgravity during ESA parabolic flight campaigns and on astronauts and cosmonauts. In 2007, he joined the European Space Agency and worked as a Mission Support Scientist in the Mission Science Office of the Human Space Flight directorate where he gained experience in the operation of scientific experiments onboard the International Space Station.
In 2008 he joined the Royal Military Academy of Belgium where he contributed to found the research unit on Vital Signs and Performance (VIPER). He contributed to several research projects performed in space or on returning Cosmonauts (Cardiocog, SPIN, SPIN-D) and in extreme environments such as the Antarctic Concordia station (COGNIPOLE, ESCOM) or on the Short Arm Human Centrifuge (SAHC).
From 2013 to 2017, he was co-founder and President of the non-profit “Suborbital Research Association”, aiming at developing the interest for Science performed in suborbital space plane.
Currently he is at the ULB directing the LPHYS research unit where he is the Scientific Principal Investigator of the ESA project: “Three-dimensional Ballistocardiography in microgravity” (B3D) and a collaboration with the Institute of Biomedical Problems in Russia. He took part as a PI in several ESA-sponsored studies in Bed-Rest. He is now actively involved in the development of the Heart-Kinetics Spin-off which is based on technology that he developed for the monitoring of the cardiac function of astronauts.
Laurence Jacobs, Professor, University Hospital Zurich
Professor Laurence Jacobs received a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1977. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, he joined the faculty of the Institute of Physics at the National University of Mexico, in his native country. He has since held several teaching and research positions, including about fifteen years at MIT, where he was a member of the Center for Theoretical Physics. During that time, he did research mainly in Quantum Field Theory, Lattice Gauge Theory, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science and Neurocardiology, and has lectured and published widely in these and other fields.
Professor Jacobs has received several prestigious awards for his research, including a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Zurich and the University Hospital Zurich. His current research is in the field of Neurocardiology, focusing primarily on understanding the mechanisms that lead to sudden death in adults and in infants.
Over the last seven years or so, Professor Jacobs has been involved in the development of three Mobile Health platforms. He developed the main concepts and the risk models that underlie the dacadoo Health Score, the dacadoo Risk Engine, and the remote disease monitoring and management system, remsmed / EMMA Care.
Prof. Dr. Karin Coninx is full professor at Hasselt University (UHasselt), Belgium. She obtained a PhD in sciences, computer science after a study of Human-Computer interaction (HCI) in immersive virtual environments. Her research interests include user-centred methodologies, persuasive applications in the context of eHealth, technology-supported rehabilitation, serious games, (multimodal) interaction in virtual environments, haptic feedback, intelligibility, mobile and context-sensitive systems, interactive work spaces, and the model-based realisation of user interfaces.
Besides performing research in the domain of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), she is strongly engaged in interdisciplinary research (e.g. HCI in the context of health and rehabilitation research and applications). Being able to contribute in the research spectrum from basic (fundamental) research up to applied research and valorization trajectories, has been very rewarding.
Karin Coninx has co-authored more than 400 international publications (according to Google Scholar) in scientific journals and conference proceedings. She was advisor of 19 finalized PhDs in HCI and co-advisor of 3 PhDs, and is still supervising PhD students in HCI topics and Health-related topics.
She was main applicant and otherwise involved in many research projects in the HCI domain. She coordinated regional and international project consortia for basic and applied research. She was co-organizer of workshops and a member of several program committees, and regularly serves as a reviewer for conferences, journals and (international) subsidy organisations.
Currently, Karin Coninx takes management responsibility as Vice-Rector Education of Hasselt University (since 2016). In this capacity, she presides several councils and commissions, including the Academic Educational Council and the Interfaculty Board of the School for Educational Studies at Hasselt University.
Karin Coninx teaches several courses on computer science and specific HCI subjects at Hasselt University, initiated a Master in HCI and co-initiated master profiles in Health Informatics and Engineering Interactive Systems.
Dr Aaron Peace is a Consultant Cardiologist in the Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT) in the NHS and Visiting Professor to Northern Ireland Centre for Stratified Medicine in Ulster University. Dr Peace qualified from Queen’s University, Belfast in 1998, then moving to Royal Northshore in Sydney before returning to Ireland to train in Cardiology. During his training, he was awarded a HRB Clinical PhD Fellowship Grant which lead to him graduating with a PhD from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in field of platelet biology focusing on platelet function assay development to help predict cardiovascular risk. He later completed subspecialty training in Interventional Cardiology following a 2-year Fellowship in the renowned Cardiovascular Centre, OLV Hospital, Aalst, Belgium. He is widely published in the areas of platelet function electrocardiology and coronary physiology, and has written several book chapters. He was co-author of the paper that won the ESC Young Investigator award in 2012. He is an ESC Guideline Committee reviewer for Myocardial Revascularisation and an invited reviewer for several high impact journals including European Heart Journal and Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. He has been a Guest Faculty member at EuroPCR and other international meetings. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the Royal College of Physicians. He is currently the Director of Research and Development in the WHSCT and CEO of the Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Centre (C-TRIC). His main interest is in how digital solutions can guide healthcare provision and data analytics.
